Artist Statement

-

I am an artist-filmmaker, working on experimental and collaborative films with various migrant and worker communities. I am interested in sharing authorial control of my projects through co-directing and collaborative filmmaking activities with the communities I work with, involving people in self-representation throughout the filmmaking process.

-

I am interested in examining the ethics of participation through my practice and challenging the hierarchies and power relationships historically embedded in participatory practices and broader art and film production contexts. I believe participatory filmmaking can serve as a successful tool for community engagement, addressing specific issues that groups and individuals experience through co-creation of outputs and sharing them with broader audiences.

-

I aim to build long-term relationships with the communities I work with through engaging them in filmmaking practice and the ongoing output dissemination activities within the contemporary art and design, community event and film festival contexts. The films we make together can then serve as part of a wider conversation with broad range of audiences, organisations and other communities, and can function as catalysts for shift within socio-political and cultural landscape.
